Through ongoing skills development, education and engagement with young people, the company is committed to helping individuals build the knowledge, experience and confidence needed to progress in their careers.
By combining academic learning with practical, on-the-job experience, Derry Ltd supports its team in developing their technical expertise while gaining a valuable understanding of the industry and the role building services engineering plays in the built environment.
Mechanical Trainee Engineers, Finn Nicholls and William Price, are both progressing in their studies, taking different routes to develop their knowledge and skills within the industry.
Finn is studying for a Building Services Engineering Degree Apprenticeship (BEng Hons) at Leeds Beckett University. Combining academic study with practical design experience at Derry Ltd, his course covers a broad range of engineering principles, including thermodynamics, mechanical and electrical systems, and the design of essential building services such as heating, ventilation, power and water.
William has successfully completed his Level 3 National Diploma in Building Services Engineering at Leeds College of Building and will return to continue his studies at Level 4, working towards a Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Building Services Engineering from February 2027.
Their progress reflects the value of combining formal qualifications with hands-on experience, helping to build the technical understanding and practical skills required to develop a long-term career in building services engineering.
Alongside investing in the development of its own team, Derry Ltd recognises the importance of helping young people explore career opportunities and prepare for their next steps into the world of work.
The company recently took part in The Minster School’s Year 13 Mock Interview Day in Southwell, giving students the opportunity to experience a real-world interview and develop their confidence ahead of future education and employment opportunities.
During the event, the Derry Ltd team interviewed students using their CVs and personal statements to shape individual questions around their interests, experience and ambitions. The sessions also provided an opportunity to offer tailored feedback, helping students understand their strengths and identify areas for further development.
Initiatives such as this provide valuable insight into the expectations of the workplace while helping young people strengthen their communication skills, build confidence and consider the opportunities available to them as they begin their careers.
